Abstract
To evaluate the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV0 and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in hemodialysis (HD) units and the role of some risk factors, we tested sera from 205 patients at 4 HD units for HBV infection and from 125 HD units for
HCV
infection in Kyeongnam, Korea. The prevalence of HBV and HCV infeftion were 10.7% and 10.4%, respectively. This rate was not so much higher than the average hemodialysis units in Korea. The prevaloence of HBs Ag showed showed no relation to the
duration
of hemodialysis, history of blood transfusion and amount of blood transfused. The mean duration (month) of hemodialysis of the anti HCV positive and anti HCV negative group were 52.7¡¾27.5 and 31.9¡¾26.0 respetively. This showed the correlation
betweend
the prevalence of anti HCV and the duration of hemodialysis treatment (p<0.01). The prevalence of anti HCV incereased statistically significantly with increasing duraiton of hemodialysis and with increasintg amount of transfusion (p<0.05), but
not
ralted to hishtory of blood transfusion.
